Daron Key
Sounds
Daron Key is a sound artist and improviser based in Volcano, Hawaiʻi. Over a three-decade practice, Daron has utilized deconstructed string instruments, extended techniques, extreme volume, and sustained drone to step out of the way and let the sounds map out site-specific sonic explorations.
Daron's musical lineage is rooted in the late-1990s and 2000s Northern California experimental underground. As an active practitioner in the DIY San Francisco Bay Area noise and free-improvisation scenes, his performance history includes sharing bills, and collaborating with a legendary pioneers of the American avant-garde, including Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes, Marshall Tramell, Ettrick, Pink and Brown.
Following a prolonged, deliberate hiatus from public spaces to focus on family, during which his sonic and artistic research continued in private isolation, Daron recently returned to live performance with a high-intensity collaborative set alongside vocalist and electronic improviser Charmaine Lee. This return has been further solidified by recent international presence, including the broadcast selection of his piece Resonant Void at Chile's Sur Aural Festival, and a California tour alongside Hair Grease supporting physical releases distributed through Zum Audio.
His current work, focused on instrumental solo releases like Tephra Dusting, rejects commercialized stereotypes of regional music. Instead, it operates as a radical, site-specific sound art. Rooted in the lived experience of his mixed heritage the work channels intuitive echoes from traditional Hawaiian kī hōʻalu (slack key) and raga inspired forms, and colliding them with the physical friction of heavy, improvisational, noise, and drone.
